About

Music is a superior medium to books when it comes to learning a new language.  Ek Fankaar is an attempt to improve my Hindi/Urdu vocabulary and to learn to appreciate Ghazals and Hindi film songs at the same time.

    Hello,

Your attempt to improve your Hindi/Urdu has in turn, helped uncover greatest songs/singers that seem to be obsolete in this day and age. Your endeavor has given hope to hundreds, if not thousands of people who are trying to rekindle their love for the beautiful poetry in in these beautiful songs.

    Thank You

The collection of some soul stirring music touches the chords of our tender hearts. The purity and divinity in the music of the golden era is a combination of hardwork, poetry and soulful rendition inspired by the creative force of God.
Many of these songs were original creations and was never motivated by money, greed, fame or one upmanship. Blessed are the master creators and also the creators of this website who has done a great service to humanity by their efforts to revive those golden days. I would like to know the people behind the scenes who has so painstakingly and selflessly created this website.

Hi, Thanks for such a wondeful blog. Could you pl add another category to your list that for Qawwali. How about adding “चढ़ता सुरज धीरे धीरे ढलता है ढल जायेगा” I don’t know the lyricist for this, but the singer is Azia Naza. I can provide the complete lyrics if that makes it easier for you.
    Cheers!

    Apko Salam.

  33. Rani on

Dear “ek fankaar”, I believe that “Aahat si koi aaye to lagta hai ki tum ho” would be another beautiful ghazal to be a part of your wonderful collection. This is sung by Bhupinder, i remember, and is in the collection “Journey”. Journey has some other soulful ghazals like “aap jinke qareeb hote hain” sung by Pankaj Udhas and “tum naghma-e-maho anjum ho” by talat aziz.I would appreciate if you would post all these soulful renditions.

  34. misbah huq on

the ghazal sung by humrra channa,

    konpalain………….

the meaning of semm-o -zar is sona(seem) chandi(silver) seem o zar means wealth(sonachandi)

this is what i think and i am positive.

    misbah huq

  35. misbah huq on

i forgot to mention that ,

seem o zar is persian for seem(silver) zar (sonaor gold) means wealth khazaana lots of money.

zari boutique means sona ka kaam on fabric.

seemaab is mercury too , and mercury (seem ) is expensive too.

  55. Avijit on

I think this is the best site as far as ghazal is concerned. The best part of this site is that it is non partisan(I think Jagjitji’s highest number of posting is just incidental ;) ). The way the words are explained are excellent. One humble suggestion, if you could add translation of the shers as a whole. Great work nevertheless.

  56. Lea on

This is the best translation and preservation of the wonderous world of classical ghazals i have yet to experience on the net. Thank you profusely for this.
Having become the recent shageerd of Farida Khanum, I feel like there is still hope with the likes of yourself who share the knowledge and wisdom of such incredible poetry and music. Thank you once again!

@ although I don’t need to learn Urdu or Urdu poetry,
but I discovered atleast, Khansaheb Mehdi Hassan’s
ghazals in a very fine acoustic, hearing each and
every note clearly, and of course his Ghazal’s choice
and selection of Raag’s thaat is sublime, just sublime¨

He is the only one who has used minimum 28 different
    major raag-thaats, its amazing.

  65. Subah on

Thanks for sharing your “Heart of GOLD” & “Lots of LOVE”.

  66. Ghazala on

I am so delighted to stumble on your blog tonight. It was an absolute pleasure to see all these shairs and singers. You have done a tremendous job by selecting and placing all the “heeras” of the Urdu ghazals and providing meanings of each word. Simply marvelous.

I have some suggestions. Can you make it more user friendly by providing:

    1. Page numbers where we would know what page we are on
    2. First and last pages in case some one wants to go to the last page and then come back to the first

    That would be very helpful.
